A Heap alternative that surfaces why users churn, not just what they clicked

Short answer

Heap (now Heap by Contentsquare) is a digital insights platform known for autocapture: it records every user interaction automatically, so you can define events retroactively instead of instrumenting them up front. Its free tier covers 10,000 monthly sessions with 6 months of history and includes SSO, and the three paid tiers, Growth, Pro and Premier, are all quote-based. The billing unit is sessions, not events and not tracked users, which many write-ups get wrong. UserInsight is the alternative for teams who want the reason behind the behavior: it unifies usage with feedback, tickets, reviews and surveys, then surfaces why users churn automatically, with every insight traced to its evidence.

Heap made its name on autocapture. Instead of asking engineers to instrument every event in advance, it records interactions automatically and lets you define events after the fact, which is genuinely useful when you realize you need to analyze a flow you never tagged. Since the Contentsquare acquisition it also folds in more experience-analytics tooling. For a team that wants retroactive, no-instrumentation behavioral analytics, it is a strong option.

The reason teams look for a Heap alternative is usually one of two things. The commercial one: beyond the free tier, nothing is published, so budgeting means a sales call. The analytical one: autocapture tells you what users did in exhaustive detail, but the answer to "why did they leave?" is not in the clickstream. It is in the tickets they filed and the reviews they wrote. UserInsight is built for the team that wants the why surfaced, not reconstructed from events.

UserInsight is for teams who want the why surfaced automatically, fusing product usage with feedback, tickets, reviews and surveys, and priced transparently without a sales call.

Side by side

Heap vs UserInsight, honestly

A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.

What matters UserInsight Heap
Core model Unifies usage, feedback, tickets, reviews and surveys in one model Autocapture behavioral analytics with retroactive event definition
Getting to the why Surfaces churn reasons and friction proactively, no query to write You build the report or funnel to test a hypothesis against captured events
Qualitative voice Reads tickets, reviews and open-text survey answers, clustered into themes Centered on behavioral events; qualitative feedback is not the focus
Autocapture Captures behavior without manual tagging, joined to the customer voice Genuine strength: retroactive autocapture, no upfront instrumentation
Free tier Free plan to try the platform on your data 10,000 sessions a month, 6 months of history, SSO included, no support
Billing unit Published plans, no volume meter to forecast Sessions, not events or tracked users. Web sessions end after 30 min idle
Pricing transparency Transparent, self-serve plans, no sales call to see a price All three paid tiers quote-only; Growth reported from about $3,600/yr

Why teams pick UserInsight

One platform that fuses behavior and voice

Behavior joined to voice

Heap captures what users do. UserInsight joins that behavior to what they say in tickets, reviews and surveys, so the number and the reason arrive together.

No query to write

Instead of building the right report to confirm a hunch, the AI proactively surfaces why users churn and where they get stuck, ranked and quantified.

Priced in the open

Transparent, self-serve plans mean you can see what it costs and try it on your own data without booking a call with sales.

How much does Heap cost?

Heap has a free tier and three paid tiers (Growth, Pro and Premier). The free plan covers up to 10,000 monthly sessions with core analytics, SSO and 6 months of data history, which is enough to evaluate the product on a small site, though it comes with no technical support. Growth adds Sense, Contentsquare's AI layer, plus unlimited users and reports, CSV exports and 12 months of history, and is reported to start around $3,600 per year.

Heap does not publish a list price for any paid tier. All three are quoted, and the bill is driven by session volume rather than events or tracked users, which is a detail many comparison pages state incorrectly. Budget for the add-ons too: session replay, heatmaps, error analysis and the Heap Connect warehouse sync are all sold separately on Pro and only become included on Premier, and retention beyond one year is an add-on on both. Get an all-in figure rather than a tier price before you compare against anything else.

What is Heap best at?

Autocapture. Heap records user interactions automatically, so you do not have to decide in advance which events to track, and you can define and analyze events retroactively once you know what you need. For teams that have been burned by discovering a flow they wanted to analyze was never instrumented, that is a real advantage, and it lowers the engineering cost of getting started.

Since becoming part of Contentsquare, Heap sits alongside broader digital-experience tooling too. The honest limit is the same as any autocapture tool: it is excellent at recording what happened and answering behavioral questions you point it at, and it is not built to tell you why people left, because that reason lives in tickets and reviews, not in the clickstream.

Heap vs UserInsight: which should you choose?

Choose Heap if the job is behavioral and you value autocapture: you want every interaction recorded, retroactive event definition, and the freedom to analyze flows you never tagged. It does that well and starts free at low volume.

Choose UserInsight if the question you keep failing to answer is why. UserInsight unifies product usage with support tickets, app reviews, in-app feedback and survey responses, then clusters the recurring themes and ties them to behavior, so a churn spike arrives with a named reason and the exact evidence behind it. Heap gives you a complete record of what users did; UserInsight gives you the conclusion about why, and prices it without a sales call.

Can you get the why from autocapture alone?

Not really, and it is worth being direct about it. Autocapture gives you an exhaustive record of what users did, which is genuinely valuable, but a clickstream is a description of behavior, not an explanation of it. You can see that 38 percent of new accounts never reach the second session; you cannot see from the events that they left because an import step silently fails on files over 10MB.

That reason is written down, just not in the analytics tool. It is in the ticket the user filed and the one-star review they left the next day. UserInsight joins those qualitative sources to the behavior automatically, clusters the recurring reasons, and quantifies each one, so the why comes with the what instead of being reconstructed by hand from a funnel.

Good questions

Heap vs UserInsight, answered

If your gap is the why rather than the what, yes. Heap is excellent at autocapture and retroactive behavioral analysis. UserInsight is the better fit when you need churn drivers, friction points and feature demand surfaced automatically from feedback, tickets and reviews alongside usage, with pricing you can see up front.
Yes. Heap offers a free tier covering up to 10,000 monthly sessions with core analytics, SSO and 6 months of data history, which is a fair way to evaluate autocapture on a small site. There is no technical support on it, and Sense, the Contentsquare AI layer, starts on Growth. All three paid tiers are quote-only.
Sessions. Heap's own pricing page and help documentation meter session volume, not monthly tracked users and not events, despite a number of comparison pages saying otherwise. A web session ends after 30 minutes of pageview inactivity and a mobile session after 5 minutes. That means a product people open several times a day generates far more billable sessions than the same audience would suggest, so work out your sessions-per-user ratio before reading any quote.
You approach the data differently. Rather than a retroactive clickstream you query, UserInsight surfaces the recurring themes across behavior and the customer voice and ties them to the accounts involved, on aggregate consented data with no PII. It is a shift from reconstructing the why from events to having it surfaced for you.
