Pendo vs Amplitude vs Mixpanel: pricing, billing models and which product analytics tool fits your team

Short answer

Pendo and Amplitude solve overlapping problems but bill in completely different units. Pendo charges per monthly active user and publishes no dollar prices at all above its free tier, which stops at 500 MAU. Amplitude charges per event, gives 2 million events a month free forever, and bundles session replay, experimentation and in-app guides into every tier including the free one. Pick Pendo when in-app onboarding and guidance are the main job and you accept a sales-quoted contract. Pick Amplitude when you want deeper behavioral analysis and published allowances you can budget against. Neither one tells you why a number moved, which is the gap UserInsight is built to close.

The comparisons that rank for this query mostly argue about feature checklists, which stopped being the real difference some time ago. Both tools draw funnels, both do retention and cohorts, and both now ship in-app guides. What actually separates them in 2026 is the unit on the invoice and how much of the platform you have to buy separately.

Every figure on this page was read directly off pendo.io/pricing, amplitude.com/pricing and mixpanel.com/pricing in July 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a number, this page says so rather than repeating a third-party estimate as though it were a list price. That matters more here than in most comparisons, because Pendo publishes no rate card at all.

Why it works

What your team gets with product analytics

The why, next to the what

Whichever platform you pick, its funnels and cohorts sit beside the tickets, reviews and survey replies from the same users, so a drop-off arrives with candidate causes attached.

Reasons ranked, not read by hand

Recurring themes and sentiment shifts are clustered and ranked for you, instead of someone working through three hundred tickets hoping to spot a pattern.

Evidence you can open

Every finding links back to the exact events and messages behind it, on aggregate, consented data with no PII exposed.

What it handles

Unified, analyzed and surfaced, automatically

UserInsight unifies your sources, reads behavior and voice together, and surfaces the churn reasons, feature requests, friction steps and themes, each traced to the signals behind it.

  • Runs alongside Pendo, Amplitude or Mixpanel rather than replacing any of them
  • Explains why a funnel step or an onboarding flow lost users, not just that it did
  • Clusters the reasons customers give across tickets, reviews and survey replies
  • Ranks recurring themes by how many accounts and how much revenue they touch
  • Prices transparently, so there is at least one line on the bill you can see upfront

Why UserInsight

One platform that fuses behavior and voice

Not an analytics tool that only shows the what, not a feedback repository that is blind to behavior. UserInsight joins both and surfaces the why, on aggregate consented data with no PII.

Unifies every source

Usage analytics, tickets, reviews, surveys and in-app feedback come together in one model, so behavior and voice finally live in the same place.

Surfaces the why

You do not write a query and wait. UserInsight tells you why churn moved and what to build next, ranked and quantified, the moment it changes.

Traced to evidence

Every insight links back to the specific tickets, reviews and events behind it, so you can click through and trust what you act on. No black box.

How much does Pendo cost?

Pendo publishes no dollar figures above its free plan. The pricing page lists Free at 500 monthly active users, then Base, Core and Ultimate, all three marked custom pricing at a custom MAU volume, with Predict and Agent Analytics as paid add-ons. Every real number comes from a sales conversation.

The reported ranges from buyers and procurement data put Growth-shaped deals somewhere around $7,000 to $25,000 a year at 1,000 to 10,000 MAU, with mid-market averages reported closer to $47,000. Treat those as reported ranges rather than list prices, because Pendo has never confirmed them. What you can plan on is the shape of the bill: it scales with how many people use your product, not with how much you track, so a consumer app with a large casual user base gets expensive fast even if you only measure a handful of events.

Is Pendo free?

Yes, up to 500 monthly active users. The free plan includes product analytics, in-app guides, plus Pendo-branded roadmaps and NPS surveys, and it is a real product rather than a time-limited trial. For an early-stage product with a small logged-in user base it is genuinely usable.

The 500 MAU ceiling is the constraint that ends it, and it arrives sooner than teams expect, because MAU counts everyone who opens the product, not just your active accounts. Pendo also has a newer free beta called Novus with no MAU limit during the beta, aimed at continuous product monitoring: it auto-instruments through GitHub, posts recommendations into Slack and opens AI-generated pull requests. That is a different product from the main platform, so do not plan a purchase around it, but it is worth a look if you want Pendo data without the MAU cap.

What is the difference between Pendo and Amplitude?

The billing unit is the cleanest answer. Pendo bills per monthly active user, Amplitude bills per event. If your product has a large user base doing a few things each, Pendo is the more expensive shape. If you have a smaller user base that is heavily instrumented, Amplitude is the more expensive shape. Model your own numbers against both before you get attached to a feature list.

The second difference is depth versus breadth of the job. Amplitude goes deeper on behavioral analysis: behavioral cohorts, user paths, account-level reporting for B2B products where the customer is a company rather than a person. Pendo goes wider on acting inside the product: guides, tooltips, onboarding flows and in-app messaging are its center of gravity, and the analytics exist largely to target them. If your team's real output is onboarding experiences, Pendo fits the work. If it is analysis that changes what gets built, Amplitude fits better.

Does Amplitude now do what Pendo does?

Partly, and this is the part most comparison pages have not caught up with. Amplitude bought Command AI and launched Guides and Surveys, so in-app onboarding, tooltips, checklists, announcements and surveys are now native to Amplitude and included in every tier, limited on Free and Plus and unlimited on Growth and Enterprise. The moat Pendo had for years is no longer exclusive.

That does not make them equivalent yet. Pendo's guide tooling is more mature, its visual editor is easier for non-technical teams, and the whole product is organized around building and targeting guidance rather than treating it as an adjacent module. The honest read in 2026 is that Amplitude is now good enough at guides that a team already buying Amplitude often should not add Pendo for that reason alone, while a team whose primary deliverable is in-product guidance still gets a better tool from Pendo.

Pendo vs Amplitude vs Mixpanel: which one should you pick?

Mixpanel belongs on the shortlist because it is the most forecastable of the three. It publishes $0.28 per 1,000 events past a free first million, which means you can multiply your tracking plan by a real rate and get a budget before you talk to anyone. Neither Pendo nor Amplitude gives you that above their entry tiers.

A simple way to choose: pick Pendo if the job is guiding users inside the product and you can live with a quoted contract. Pick Amplitude if the job is deep behavioral analysis and you want replay, experimentation and guides arriving on one bill. Pick Mixpanel if a product manager needs to self-serve funnels and retention at a cost you can predict from a spreadsheet. If you are weighing only the analytics side of that decision, the Amplitude vs Mixpanel comparison goes deeper on those two specifically.

Can you use Pendo and Amplitude together?

Yes, and unlike most tool pairings this one is defensible. Because they do different primary jobs, some teams run Amplitude as the analysis layer and Pendo as the in-product guidance layer, using Amplitude to find where users stall and Pendo to build the guide that fixes it. The cost is two instrumentation efforts and two bills, so it only pays off at real scale.

Since Amplitude added Guides and Surveys, that argument has weakened considerably. Before committing to both, check whether Amplitude's guide tooling is sufficient for what your team actually ships, because paying two vendors for overlapping capability is the most common avoidable line item in this category. The pairing that still earns its place is a behavioral tool plus something that answers a different question entirely: what happened, and then why it happened.

What type of software is Pendo?

Pendo is a product experience platform. It combines product analytics, in-app guidance and user feedback in one tool, installed through a snippet or SDK in your application. It is not a CRM and it does not manage customer relationships or sales pipeline; it works inside your product, on the logged-in experience, rather than on your commercial data.

The category label matters when you are comparing quotes, because Pendo is usually evaluated against two very different sets of tools. Against Amplitude, Mixpanel, Heap and PostHog it is being judged as product analytics. Against Userpilot, Whatfix and Appcues it is being judged as a digital adoption and onboarding platform. Pendo is priced as the combined platform, which is why it can look expensive next to either one on its own and reasonable next to buying both.

Good questions

Questions about product analytics

Because Pendo does not publish one. Its pricing page lists Free at 500 MAU and then Base, Core and Ultimate as custom pricing with no rate card. Rather than repeat a third-party estimate as if it were official, this page says the price is quoted and gives reported ranges clearly labeled as reported.
The figures were read directly off pendo.io/pricing, amplitude.com/pricing and mixpanel.com/pricing in July 2026 and we recheck them roughly every four to six weeks. Vendors in this category change packaging often, and stale pricing is the fastest way to make a comparison useless.
No. UserInsight is additive rather than a replacement. It takes the behavioral signal you already trust from whichever platform you chose and joins it to the feedback, tickets and reviews that explain it, so the question of which tool draws the funnel stays entirely yours.
