What is a good customer effort score?

On the common 1 to 7 agreement scale, a good CES is one where most respondents pick 6 or 7, meaning they agreed the task was easy. Many teams report CES as the percentage of respondents who scored 5 and above, and treat anything above roughly 70 percent as healthy, though the exact cutoff depends on the flow and how you word the question.

The absolute number matters less than the trend and the segment. A support CES of 68 percent that is climbing after you simplified a workflow is a better sign than a flat 75 percent with a cluster of high-effort complaints you have never read. Track it per flow, watch the direction, and read the comments behind the low scores. That is where the actionable part lives.

How is customer effort score calculated?

You ask one question after a task, most often the agreement statement "[Company] made it easy for me to handle my issue," answered on a 1 to 7 scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The two main ways to report it are the average score across responses, and the percentage of respondents who chose the top boxes (usually 5, 6 and 7).

The top-box percentage is the more common and more readable form: if 140 of 200 respondents scored 5 or above, your CES is 70 percent. Some teams use a 1 to 5 scale or a numeric-effort version instead, so what matters is picking one format and keeping it consistent, otherwise your trend line is comparing different things.

When should you use CES instead of NPS or CSAT?

Reach for CES when your problem is friction in a specific task: users dropping out of onboarding, repeat tickets about the same action, or a self-serve flow that quietly fails. CES points straight at the effort of getting something done, and a high-effort step is unambiguous to act on, which is why support and product teams lean on it.

Use CSAT when you want to know whether a specific experience landed well, and NPS when you want a relationship-level loyalty signal you can trend over quarters. They are not rivals. Most mature teams run all three, because they cost almost nothing to ask, and each answers a different question. Why does the CES survey comment matter more than the score?

A CES of 62 percent tells you effort is a problem. It does not tell you that 90 of the low scores describe the same confusing permission step, or that a recent change added a field nobody understands. That explanation is in the free-text follow-up, and in most companies that text is the most valuable and least-read dataset they own.
