How much does PostHog cost?
PostHog is usage-based and publishes its pricing openly, which is one of the genuinely good things about it. Each product carries its own free monthly allowance, checked against posthog.com/pricing in July 2026: 1 million analytics events, 5,000 web session recordings, 1 million feature flag requests, 1,500 survey responses and 100,000 error tracking exceptions, with no charge until you pass each one.
Beyond the free tier you pay per unit, starting at $0.0000500 per analytics event and $0.0050 per session replay recording, with the analytics rate stepping down to $0.0000090 at very high volume. One caveat decides most real bills and rarely gets mentioned: PostHog charges more for identified events than anonymous ones. Its own cost documentation says identified events can be up to four times more expensive, and its pricing blog puts the anonymous discount at around 80 percent below 2 million events and 67 percent to 15 million. A logged-in B2B product sends mostly identified events, so the headline rate understates what it will pay. In practice a small product often pays nothing at all, and a growth-stage SaaS doing a few million events with meaningful replay volume typically lands in the low hundreds of dollars a month. Is PostHog good for product analytics?
Yes, and it is worth being direct about that. PostHog covers funnels, retention, cohorts, paths, session replay, feature flags and experiments in one place, it is open source, and the free tier means a small team can run serious analytics for nothing. If you are an engineering-led team that wants to own its data and is comfortable building its own queries, PostHog is a strong default.
The honest limitation is scope. It is an instrument, and instruments answer the question you point them at. It will show you that 38 percent of new accounts never reach the second session, precisely and reliably. It will not tell you that they left because the import step silently fails on files over 10MB, because that fact lives in support tickets, not events.
PostHog vs UserInsight: which should you choose?
Choose PostHog if the work you need done is behavioral and you have the engineering appetite to do it: you want to define events, build funnels, run experiments, self-host if it suits you, and keep costs near zero at low volume. It is very good at that and priced accordingly.
Choose UserInsight if the question you keep failing to answer is why. UserInsight unifies product usage with support tickets, app reviews, in-app feedback and survey responses, then clusters the recurring themes and ties them to behavior, so a churn spike arrives with a named reason and the exact evidence behind it. Can you self-host UserInsight like PostHog?
No, UserInsight is a hosted product. But the comparison people expect here deserves a correction, because PostHog's self-hosting story is weaker than almost every article about it suggests. PostHog is genuinely open source and publishes a Docker Compose deployment under an MIT license, so you can run it yourself for free. What its own documentation then says is that self-hosted deployments are officially unsupported, that all paid-plan features are Cloud-only, and that new deployments of the paid open source product using Kubernetes are no longer supported. PostHog's own guidance is that Cloud is the best experience for the vast majority of users.
So if the requirement driving your search is that every event must stay inside your infrastructure with vendor support behind it, verify that early rather than assuming PostHog solves it. The self-hosted build is a free-tier evaluation route, not a supported enterprise deployment.
